Course Description

The Chief Officer Certificate of Competency represents a senior level of maritime command, qualifying officers for the second-in-command position on merchant vessels. This advanced certification demonstrates mastery of cargo operations, ship stability, crew management, and vessel administration.

Chief Officers are responsible for cargo planning and operations, maintenance scheduling, crew welfare, and serving as the Master's primary deputy. This comprehensive program prepares officers for these critical responsibilities through advanced theoretical study and practical application.

Entry Requirements

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 22 years
  • Hold Second Officer Certificate of Competency
  • Minimum 12 months sea service as Second Officer
  • Valid STCW certifications (all mandatory)
  • Demonstrated competency evaluations

  • Seafarer medical certificate
  • Certificate of Discharge Book (CDC)
  • Sea service testimonials with Master's recommendations
  • Second Officer COC and all endorsements
  • Competency assessment records

Extensive sea service documentation and performance evaluations required. Leadership experience strongly preferred.

  • Maintain minimum 90% attendance
  • Pass all advanced module examinations (minimum 75%)
  • Complete complex cargo and stability assignments
  • Demonstrate leadership in simulator scenarios
  • Pass comprehensive final examination
